Of the Dodge Mahal and the Destroilet

July 30, 2010 By Mike Bumbeck

travco-270-leadA 413 cubic inch big block Mopar wedge and modern aerodynamics are two good things to have when it comes time to hit the road behind the wheel of a house. This Travco 270 has not just one, but both these attributes. The Travco was originally marketed as a self-powered, self-contained, complete home-on-wheels. The sixties-era Travcos were indeed a groundbreaking vehicles, incorporating now commonplace recreational vehicle features such as central air conditioning, on board electrical generation, and Space Age fiberglass construction. All of this and more was molded into a modern design and set atop readily available Dodge truck chassis, with one version of the Travco easily holding the best name ever title for a mopowered motorhome. The Dodge Mahal.

The Travco 270 was manufactured in various configurations from the sixties into the seventies, and driven by the likes of Johnny Cash and William Shatner. Captian Kirk evidently drove a custom-built four wheel drive Travco. Normal and famous folks alike could opt for the built-for-two Dodge Mahal, or many other configurations. The Travco company was also instrumental in changing the tax laws so that the home-on-wheels was no longer considered a truck by the IRS. While the 413 and later 440 Dodge V8 engines may not have been the most gas-sipping mills to propel a recreational vehicle of this magnitude, the Travco was miles ahead of the coming water crises with the revolutionary Destroilet waste incineration device. The mighty Desroilet used clean burning propane to vaporize on-board waste with fiery dispatch. 400-plus horsepower big-block Mopar mills kept occupants upwind.

More on Travco, the Destroilet, and how to buy a Travco 270 for 60 bucks. The Travco 270 seen here was seen parked in Burbank, California while a warehouse full of scented oils went up in smoke.

You’ll have to do the FMC next! 440 pusher and also equipped with a waste incinerator. The light fixtures in the Travco are beautiful, by the way. The whole interior is hipster heaven.

No Destroilet pictures? Should I be sad or relieved?

I had a friend that got busted by his wife after he, his Travco, and his mistress were pictured in a Washington Post article. It was a full frontal shot including them and his Travco Club member number.

The Olds 455 ci powered GMC motorhomes of the same era were bigger, nicer, and still command higher prices!
