Santa Clara Sunset

July 24, 2009 By Mike Bumbeck

datsun_710It was hard to tell what sort of deal this fairly clandestine roll-in of old school imports on El Camino Real had in store. Word came in by way of forums, text messages, and Craigslist postings, but the simple facts were enough. Old schools. 7PM until whenever, and finally a good reason to go park near a Starbucks. By nightfall cars had rolled in from as far out as Modesto, and it became obvious that Datsun was the marquee of choice. From SR20DET powered Datsun 1200 Roadsters right up to a rare ’73 Datsun 610 wearing early-eighties Mitsubishi Starion wheels, there were plenty of reasons to hang out and share some knowledge. Stay tuned to Clunkbucket for a few mini-features on some of the cars shown here, as well as announcements as to when the next Thursday in Santa Clara will happen. And yesย  – there is clearly some major editorial bias towards slot mags around here.

Dammit. I was stuck in SF. Looks like these are going to happen monthly now. Last Thursday of every month.

Those are some sweet cars. They have far more character than the billion horsepower Supras, billion dollar Skylines, or billion-in-every-city Civics. I would think such rides might be found in the Vortex of Awesome, personally.

Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to more in-depth on some of these cool rides.

You know what? I’m okay with that.

I’ve always been a fan of mid-60s American classics, with their more restrained styling over the swoopy, bloated ’68-and-later models (despite the horsepower differences).

It’s that same restrained styling that draws me to the classic import cars as well. They’re like 3/4 scale models of ’65ish Yank Tanks.

Yup,even the Japanese designed nicer cars years ago.

It was a better turn out than our first meetup. Glad to see folks come from far and nearby. Yeah like Andrew posted I’ve posted that this will be a monthly meet on the last Thursday of the month. I’ll still be posting it up on the same websites as before (Ratsun/The510Realm/KP61.net/JCC/Toyotanation/Craigslist/Etx) so stay tuned. ๐Ÿ™‚

P.S. I like the pic of my VooDoo blue 2 door 510 with the 16″ Panasports! ๐Ÿ™‚

That Datsun 710 is awesome. A little extra lowering would make it superb. ADDCO sells sway bars that will give it Corvette’esque cornering abilities .
Try getting the bumpers and bumper brackets from Mexico. Mexican Datsun 710s did sell with smaller J series engines ( as opposed to the L series, L18 and L20B engines in US.), but the Mexican 710s look better bodywise, because those cars sold south of the border did not use the 5 mph big ” park bench ” style bumpers, and the front valance/apron and fenders are exactly same as the JDM ones ( japanese domestic market ) ( Datsun Violet as known in Japan.)
Front fenders, bumpers and bumper brackets, plus the grille, from Mexico and your 710 will look even better!!!!
    Nice ride!!!!!!!
